01 - Layouts

Three ways to place a rug

Every small living room balances floor coverage against budget and walkways. Compare the three standard placements below and test each one in the planner.

Top-down architectural diagram of All legs on the rug layoutTo-scale plan showing an 8 by 10 foot rug reaching under all four legs of the sofa and the coffee table, with generous overhang on every side.8 × 10 ft · 244 × 305 cm
Layout 1

All legs on the rug

The sofa sits completely on the rug, which reaches past it on every side (6–8 in / 15–20 cm guideline). It gives the seating area the most settled look.

Best for: rooms with floor to spare.

Top-down architectural diagram of Front legs on the rug layoutTo-scale plan showing a 5 by 8 foot rug tucked a short way under the front of the sofa so the front legs sit on the rug and the coffee table rests on the rug.5 × 8 ft · 152 × 244 cm
Layout 2

Front legs on the rug

The rug reaches under the sofa's front legs (about 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) under the frame) while the back legs stay on the floor. Ties the seating group together without the biggest rug.

Best for: most small rooms.

Top-down architectural diagram of Floating rug layoutTo-scale plan showing a rug placed in front of the sofa under the coffee table only, with a strip of bare floor between the sofa and the rug.5 × 8 ft · Floating
Layout 3

Floating rug

The rug sits under the coffee table only, leaving a narrow strip of floor in front of the sofa. Can work in a very small room but often makes the seating area look smaller, so keep the table's feet fully on the rug.

Best for: tiny rooms or tight budgets.

Quick size check

Clearance guidelines and common US and metric rug sizes in feet, inches, and centimetres.
Situation US (ft / in) Metric (cm)
Rug past each side of the sofa At least 6 in; 8 in is ideal At least 15 cm; 20 cm is ideal
Walkway between large pieces 30–36 in 76–91 cm
Rug under a bed, past three sides About 24 in About 61 cm
Common US size 5 x 8 ft About 152 x 244 cm
Common US size 8 x 10 ft About 244 x 305 cm
Common US size 9 x 12 ft About 274 x 366 cm
Common metric size About 5 ft 3 in x 7 ft 7 in 160 x 230 cm
Common metric size About 6 ft 7 in x 9 ft 10 in 200 x 300 cm

Converting isn't buying. US and metric rug sizes are different ranges, so a converted size may not exist where you shop. Pick from the sizes your local shops actually sell.

04 - Before you order

The painter's tape test

Screen planners narrow down your options, but physical tape on your own floor catches radiator pipes, door swings, and awkward walkways before you spend a penny.

  1. Measure the seating area

Measure your sofa width and the open floor depth from the back wall in both inches and centimetres. Write down where radiators, floor vents, or doorway swings sit.

  2. Tape the outline

Press low-tack painter's tape onto the floor at the exact corners of the rug size you are considering (such as 5 x 8 ft / 152 x 244 cm or 160 x 230 cm).

  3. Live with it for a day

Walk through the room as normal and pull out your coffee table or desk chair. Check whether your feet catch the taped edge along main walkways (30–36 in / 76–91 cm clearance).

  4. Adjust, then buy

If the taped border feels cramped against a wall or doorway, shift the tape to test a front-legs-only placement before ordering the size your local shop stocks.

05 - Practical answers

Common questions

Should the rug go under the whole sofa?

Only if your room has enough depth and width to leave calm floor borders around the edges. In most small living rooms, placing just the front legs of the sofa on the rug (about 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) under the sofa frame) anchors the seating area without overwhelming the room.

What if my room only fits a small rug?

If a larger rug would block a doorway or run straight into a baseboard, choose a floating layout or a compact size like 5 x 8 ft (152 x 244 cm) or 160 x 230 cm (5 ft 3 in x 7 ft 7 in). Make sure all four legs of the coffee table sit comfortably on the rug surface so the arrangement looks intentional.

Why show both inches and centimetres?

Design advice is often written only in feet and inches, while many retailers and tape measures work in centimetres—or vice versa. Showing both units side by side saves you from mental arithmetic and helps you spot how US standard sizes differ from metric standard sizes.

How accurate are these figures?

They are standard rules of thumb, checked in October 2026 against published designer and retailer guidance (see Sources below). Every room is different, so measure yours and test the outline with painter's tape before you buy.
